BENEFICIARY OF THE PROJECT

Environmental Protection Agency Timiş

The Environmental Protection Agency Timis (LEPA) ensures, through specialized departments, the carrying out of environmental protection in the county of Timis.

In period 2009 – 2011 it was developed the project LIFE PLUS „Preserving management of the habitats 8310 from the Site Natura 2000 Semenic – Cheile Carasului” PMH8310SN2000SCC, LIFE07 NAT/RO/000680

The purpose of the project

Reconstruction of morphology of the 8310 Habitat for 110 caves/ potholes, remediation & habitat conservation in wintering, birth and feeding areas for the populations of 14 species of bats and developing the best practices for managing at regional, national and European level.

MAIN EU POLICY(IES) TARGETED

  1. Rehabilitation of 110 cavities closed to the public (8310 habitat), degraded/ polluted.

We’ll reopen the closed entrances of caves / potholes, we’ll get out of the habitat all biologic and household waste, we’ll remake the habitat’s morphology (rehabilitation of the ceiling / floor, formations), we’ll reestablish the water level and the some underground water flows, we’ll clean the graffiti drawings from the walls, we’ll install protection fences in the entrance of the vulnerable caves.

  1. Preserving of 14 chiropteran species.

Achieving the Objective 1 we’ll reinsure the maternity, shelter and hibernation habitats for the chiropteran species and also for other cavern species of the underground ecosystems or for other protected species that use the 8310 habitat. We’ll monitor bats coming back in the 8310 habitat.

  1. Developing the best practices for managing the 8310 habitat at regional, national and European level.

We’ll develop a new methodology based on informational technology for finding the most accurate distribution and structure of the 8310 habitat being given the type of underground habitat and the difficulties for inventory. We’ll develop a methodology that we’ll standardize the inventory and mapping of the habitat, at national level but also with high possibilities for using it internationally in order to avoid future important differences for determine the same habitat from a N2000 site to another one.

  1. Information of 15 local communities and conservationists.

We’ll have information campaigns about the importance of 8310 habitat and bat species for protection and the ecosystem services. We’ll try to brake the myths according to the fact that in caves there are hided treasures in order to reduce the interventions of the treasure hunters. We’ll organize educational trips with pupils in some caves from the site. Participation in conferences and organization of thematic conferences we’ll ensure promotion of the information and results gained in the project in order to replicate them exchange information. We’ll install informational panels in the local communities from the site with information of the project and the conservation needs.

The importance of the project:

The Project area is very important at regional and national level as it represents the center of the largest karst areas in Romania (Sinclinoriul Resita – Moldova Noua 800 km2), basically having the greatest potential for development of habitat 8310.

The number of units of 8310 habitat of the site Cheile Nerei – Beusnita is regionally (Caras Severin) accounted for 25% and at nationally (Romania) for 4.2%, while that now is not carried out a full inventory and the prospects are to increase the number of caves.

The 14 species of bats that are on the site represent 45% of all species of bats in Romania.

The project is important for biodiversity conservation as a whole since the 8310 habitat has direct functional link with other protected habitats or priority (7220 Petrifying springs with travertine deposit, 8210 chasmophytic vegetated rocky slopes on limestone rocks).

The 8310 habitat is also important because it is temporarily or accidentally habitat for species of large mammals, amphibians, reptiles, birds.
