Conservation activities

The Conservation activities are the reopening of the blocked entrances of the caves and potholes, the extraction of the waste and biological habitat, graffiti cleaning of the walls and the location of the gratings protection of vulnerable cavities.

  • The restoration activities consisted of: unclogging the entrances blocked with stone and earth artificially or naturally, extracting plant debris (logs from forestry operations), unclogging the entrances artificially clogged with logs and tree trunks, unclogging the gallery sections blocked by artificial or natural causes, re-leveling the ground, erasing graffiti from the walls, washing and cleaning artificially soiled formations.
  • A special action was the restoration of the gullies in order to restore the functions of the underground ecosystem and the restoration of the groundwater basins. After approx. 40 years, these basins were restored. We note that after the restoration, calcite deposits appeared shortly after over the areas reconstructed with cement, which accelerates the assimilation of the anthropogenic structure into the natural structure of the dams.
  • The decontamination of the cavities was done by removing waste of various kinds, including animal carcasses, by means adapted to the situation and using special equipment.
  • The protection of the rehabilitated habitats was done by installing protective devices (grilles, gates, fences). These were designed in such a way as not to discourage access by bats that would like to reoccupy their shelters.
